Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is a safe and effective approach to managing diabetes and its symptoms. Diabetes is a complex condition in which your body either does not produce enough insulin, or doesn’t respond to insulin properly, leading to high levels of sugar in the blood. This sugar comes from our digestive process in which food is broken down into glucose or sugar which can pass into the bloodstream. Insulin moves the sugar into muscle, fat and liver cells.

If blood sugar levels go uncontrolled, serious complications can arise if left untreated, including blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage.

There are two main types of diabetes. Type I is an autoimmune disease and is usually diagnosed during childhood. Treatment includes daily injections of insulin.

Type II diabetes is more common, accounting for 90-95% of all diabetes cases. It is usually diagnosed during adulthood. Symptoms of Type II Diabetes include increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetite, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing infections.

In many cases, diabetes can be managed by acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, sometimes making medications unnecessary. According to Oriental Medicine, Qi (chee) is vital energy which flows through the body and protects it from illness. In diabetes, there is an imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi, and also of Yin. Yin can be viewed as the cooling system of the body. That is why there are symptoms related to heat in diabetes, such as excessive thirst, irritability, itchy skin, and dry mouth.
An Acupuncture Physician uses fine sterile needles in specific acupuncture points to restore the flow of Qi and to nourish Yin. In many cases this will relieve symptoms and control blood sugar levels. In addition, Chinese Herbs may be prescribed, as well as recommendations for dietary changes and exercise.

Acupuncture for Diabetes is used to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with Diabetes. Acupuncture helps us achieve balance and control, comfort and focus, and joy in living. We have a lot of potential in our bodies but at times it can be misguided. The needles are very slender. They are about the thickness of two human hairs. Treatments are always carried out with sterile and disposable needles. They are used once and then discarded. All needles are approved by the FDA. Most insertions are just beneath the skin`s surface which enables the skilled acupuncture practitioner to place a needle with little or no sensation. We have great success in helping clients apply acupuncture to help with their Diabetes.
